DSM Enhances Claim Substantiation with 4D Holotomography Microscope

Monitoring cell changes over time and visualizing ingredient efficacy at a cellular level.

A new PCA A&D 4D holotomography microscope is enabling DSM to provide greater insight into the efficacy of its products, and that, in turn, benefits beauty brands.

The new microscope goes beyond traditional fluorescent microscopy to monitor cells continuously during application of ingredients rather than at the static ends. With this capability, DSM can visualize ingredient efficacy at a cellular level and offer a new level of claim substantiation.

According to Dr. Leithe Budel, a molecular biologist and head of DSM’s internal R&D laboratory for skincare,  this new tool demonstrates the efficacy of ingredients in realistic and tangible way, including “targets of interest” like collagen and elastin in skin cells.

With new microscope, DSM can monitor cells continuously during application of its ingredients and obtain more information, such as dry weight and granularity of cells, which indicates overall health, according to Dr. Budel.

The new microscope does not require cells be stained beforehand.

With help of AI-powered computation and the many light angles from the microscope’s rotating arm, DSM can generate a 3D impression within time, which gives an excellent 4D look, Dr. Budel said.
